What I wish I knew before starting BJJ
- Learn the major positions and guards early.
- Train consistently versus sporadically.
- Prepare yourself for the troughs.
- You don’t need to be great at everything.
- Rolling is difficult when starting no matter how physically fit you are.
What do I need for my first day of Jiu Jitsu?
T-shirts, board shorts and sweat pants are all fine. Sometimes you can wear a gi or uniform from another martial art (ask the instructor about this issue). You will need to buy a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi if you continue training. Do NOT wear anything with extra pockets, belt loops or baggy fabric.
How many times a week should a beginner do BJJ?
If you are a beginner or a “casual” Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, aim for two to three days a week. Training around two days a week is a good starting point when you’re just starting Jiu-Jitsu. You get enough time on the mats to learn and work on your technique while not getting burned out or overtrained.
Is Jiu Jitsu beginner friendly?
Some Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gyms have beginner specific classes and some have mixed level classes in which you will be partnered with someone more experienced who can help you. Some gyms are beginner friendly by offering multiple levels of memberships.

You can definitely start your Jiu-Jitsu journey in your 40s, 50s and even 60s, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be as easy as starting it at 18. If you plan on taking up BJJ, you’ll need to do your best to get adequate sleep. By now you should know what a good night’s rest feels like. Try and get that as much as possible.
