- Wash your gi immediately after training.
- Always wash your belt.
- Scrub stains with running cold water immediately before washing.
- Avoid bleach.
- Turn your gi inside out before washing.
- Wash in cold water on a gentle setting.
- If you’re washing your gi with other clothes, only wash with similar colours.

I do however wash my belts semi regularly in Jiu-Jitsu. I often will hang dry the belt post training, and then wash it every couple weeks as needed.

Always wash your gi in cold water, 90-100 degrees maximum. If your gi is a little bit too big and you actually want it to shrink a little bit (sleeves), you can wash it at 110-120 degrees, but NEVER over that temperature. Cotton shrinks and our gis are 100% cotton.

This is the most important, although the gi may feel a little stiff when you put it on, however, you massively extend the life-cycle of the gi and prevent it from shrinking altogether. Don’t throw them in the dryer UNLESS you’re intentionally trying to shrink it.

The belt gets just as dirty as the rest of the uniform; containing all of the bacteria, fungus and mites as your uniform does when worn. You should wash your spats, shorts, rashguard, gi and belt after every session – and your gumshield should be kept clean too!

Washing the belt more thoroughly with soap and water could completely ruin your belt, so it’s best to use it as a last resort. However, if you’re throwing it out anyway, washing the belt by hand may save it. Rub in more water and soap to try to clean the belt.

Should you iron your GI?
Ironing your BJJ GI If you like to iron your GI before class, then please do but do it on a low iron heat setting and with the GI inside out. Certain types of patches will melt or stick to a hot iron, so it is best to avoid them coming in to contact with the iron.
Why is my GI so stiff?
If you are using too much laundry soap, or if your washer is failing to properly rinse out all of the soap, that can make a gi massively more stiff and harsh feeling.
