What do people wear under their GI?
What you wear underneath your judo or BJJ gi is up to you. The main thing to consider is comfort. You can wear training shorts or leggings as well as your favorite athletic t-shirt. You can also wear what’s called a rashguard.
What do you wear to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Board shorts and a t-shirt or a surf rash guard will usually be ok. However, if you decide that BJJ is something you want to do and you decide to keep training then you will need to buy a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi. It’s important not to try and avoid wearing anything with pockets, belt loops or baggy fabrics.
What should I wear to my first Jiu Jitsu No Gi class?
The Basics: No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu For No-Gi BJJ, you will need Grappling Shorts and a Rash Guard. Sometimes you can get away with wearing Gi Pants instead of Fight Shorts, or a t-shirt instead of a rash guard, but this is not recommended for reasons we discuss below.
Do you need a rash guard for BJJ?
Whether you train with or without a gi, you will need to have a good rash guard. Your rash guard goes under your gi, and it helps protect your skin from scrapes and skin burns. A rash guard also keeps your body warm and helps your muscles stay supple while grappling.
Should I wear a rashguard under my gi?
Rash Guards – Even if you don’t plan on trying no-gi – which is silly, you should at least try it – some academies require you to wear a rash guard under your gi, for sanitary reasons. If you do plan on doing no-gi, rash guards help keep you from getting mat burn, ringworm, or other mat-bourne illnesses.
Do you wear anything under rashguard?
The vast majority of men do not wear anything under their rash guard and can be used directly on the skin. When it comes to the leggings, it can also be worn without anything under but for hygienic reasons, it is recommended to wear swim briefs or swim boxers.

The discomfort of a wearing a cup during jiu jitsu training far outweighs any protective benefits. Wearing a cup during jiu jitsu competitions is illegal.
Do you wear anything under a GI?
Yes, you need to wear underwear under your gi pants. It’s also not uncommon to wear compression pants or fight shorts under your kimono. At some academies, wearing fight shorts under the kimono makes for an easy transition from gi to no-gi during live training.
Do you wear shoes in BJJ?
We go barefoot on the mats and training Brazilian Jiu jitsu is a barefoot pursuit, but make sure to wear shoes off them. DON’T walk off the mats in your bare feet. A pair of €2 flip flops or even your shoes beside the mat are just fine.
Can you wear leggings to Jiu Jitsu?
I highly recommend legging type work out pants and either a long sleeve workout shirt that won’t ride up your body or short sleeve works too. Once you feel more comfortable in BJJ feel free to join that club but for your first few classes legging style workout pants and a ride up free t-shirt is the way to go!
Are there belts in no gi BJJ?
In NOGI we do not offer the stripes because students do not wear their belts during class. Students who only train NOGI will be promoted to the next belt rank without the stripes as an indicator of progression.
What is GI vs no gi?
Chances are if you’re reading this you already know the difference, but for those who don’t: gi Jiu Jitsu is where you wear the traditional outfit, and no-gi is without the traditional outfit. Plus, in the gi you can use your own gi or your opponent’s to help submit — as well as (most of) the no-gi moves.
