As is common in other martial arts, students in our capoeira group wear colored cords as belts that mark their rank. Brand new students wear raw (white) cotton cords. Masters of the art form, called mestres, wear a black cord. It can easily take upward of 20 years of consistent practice to reach that final level.
Capoeira students have ‘graduated’ in our group, and are allowed to teach under the general supervision of a mestre, starting with the green/orange cord.
